► (1759-1805) Escritor e historiador alemán. Sus primeras intenciones poéticas nacieron de la lectura de
Mesiada de Klopstock. Los autores que más influyeron en él fueron Plutarco y Rousseau. Su obra se puede dividir en tres períodos. El primero, dentro de la línea del
Sturm und Drang (Tempestad y empuje), encabezado por
Los bandidos (1782) y
Don Carlos (1783). El segundo período es el dedicado al estudio de la historia antigua y moderna y a la filosofía. Fruto de ello son
Cartas sobre la educación estética del hombre (1795) y
Sobre la poesía ingenua y la poesía sentimental (1795-96). Bajo la influencia de Goethe produce las obras de su tercer período, el considerado de la plena madurez:
Wallenstein (1796-99), una de las obras más importantes del teatro alemán,
María Estuardo (1799-1800),
La doncella de Orleans (1800-01), sobre Juana de Arco,
y Guillermo Tell (1803-04).
